Updated Travel-Ready Tips
Tenerife Car Rental Guide: Where to Pick Up and What to Know
Renting a car in Tenerife is one of the most convenient ways to explore the island beyond resort areas. Public buses cover many routes, but drive times can be long and schedules may limit sunrise hikes, remote beaches, and Teide National Park viewpoints. With a rental car you can reach diverse microclimates (north vs. south), plan flexible day trips, and avoid relying on taxis in high-demand tourist zones. Keep in mind that some popular areas have tight parking and steep roads; choosing the right vehicle size and understanding local rental policies (fuel, deposits, insurance) can help you avoid surprises.

Tenerife South Airport (TFS) – Reina Sofía
Most popular arrival airport for Tenerife. Many rental brands operate with on-airport desks or nearby lots with shuttle service. Best for travelers staying in the south (Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos) and for quick highway access via TF-1. Tip: confirm whether your supplier is located inside the terminal or requires a shuttle; allow extra time during peak holiday arrivals.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife (City Center)
Pros: good for travelers who arrive by ferry or stay in the capital; easy access to TF-5 toward the north and La Laguna. Cons: downtown traffic and limited street parking can add time; garages may have height restrictions and hourly fees.
San Cristóbal de La Laguna
Pros: strategic base for exploring the north and Anaga; often calmer than the capital for pickup/return. Cons: older streets can be narrow; parking near historic areas may be regulated or time-limited.

¿Qué necesitas para alquilar un coche en Tenerife?

Alquilar un coche en Tenerife es bastante cómodo, pero puede haber algunos requisitos específicos, especialmente para los conductores extranjeros.

  • Forma de identificación: A valid physical Spain national photo ID is required for the main driver and any additional drivers.
  • Permiso de conducir: The main and any additional drivers must present a full, physical Spanish driving license with no major endorsements. The license must generally have been held for at least 1 year; some offers require 2–4 years. If held for less than 4 years in certain offers, a young/new driver fee may apply. Spanish digital licenses may be accepted only when shown via the official DGT App, where explicitly stated.

Notas: Some locations charge a new/young driver fee when the license has been held under 4 years. In one offer, drivers with 1–3 years of holding pay about EUR 5.95 per day (capped), and in another, licenses held under 4 years incur about EUR 7.95 per day. For some vehicles (e.g., luxury/premium), higher minimum age and/or longer license holding periods may apply and will be shown during booking or advised before completion. Spanish digital driving licenses are accepted only if presented via the official DGT App, where specified.

  • Tarjetas aceptadas: Physical credit cards in the full name of the main driver are required. Visa and Master are accepted on all offers; some locations also accept JCB, AMEX, Diners Club, Discover, UnionPay, and/or debit cards (Visa/Master) and, in a few cases, cash for some charges. Some offers require two credit cards, and a few accept deposit cards. XpCard is widely supported; some offers also support DcCard, CtCard, or UnCard. Card embossing is generally not required.
  • Requisitos de edad: Depending on the offer, the general allowed age range is between 18–80 or 21–100 (common bands include 18–71, 19–75/80, 21–75/80, 23–75, and 25–80). Young driver fees apply in many offers: for example, about EUR 7.95 per day for ages 21–24 (and sometimes for older drivers 75+), about EUR 9.95 per day (capped) for ages 21–24, around EUR 10.35 per day for ages 21–22, EUR 12 per day for ages 18–25, and EUR 25 per day (with a cap) for ages 19–25. Some offers note different age rules for luxury or premium vehicles and may cap the total young driver surcharge for a rental.
  • Permiso de conducir: The main and any additional drivers must present a full, physical driving license with no major endorsements. The license must usually have been held for at least 1 year; some offers require 2–4 years and may charge a fee if held for a shorter period. Accepted driving licence include:
    • Original driving licence + International Driving Permit (IDP) (IDP is a translation; original license must also be shown; no copies)
    • EU/EEA Driving License (valid across the EU/EEA, Switzerland, and the UK) or
    • Full driver's license issued in Spain (where stated) or
    • Original driving licence + Spain sworn translation (where stated) or
    • Original driving licence + Translation of International Driver License (only in specific offers; other offers explicitly do not allow this). In some cases, Spanish digital licenses from the official DGT App are accepted.

Notas: Translation-only documents or translations of an International Driver License are not accepted in some offers for rentals in Spain. For some offers, driver’s license, passport, and IDP must be issued in the same country. In one offer, drivers with a license held less than 4 years must pay a young driver fee. Some offers accept a full Spanish license for foreign renters, including its official digital version via the DGT App where specified. Proof of collision/theft coverage from a credit card or insurer may be required in some offers; it must include the renter’s name or card details, coverage scope, validity dates, applicable countries, and vehicle types.

  • Forma de identificación: A valid physical passport is required for the main driver and any additional drivers.
  • Tarjetas aceptadas: Physical credit cards in the full name of the main driver are required. Santa Cruz de Tenerife and UNESCO-listed San Cristóbal de La Laguna feature narrow streets and limited parking typical of historic European towns. Why Pick Up at Tenerife’s Airports (TFS/TFN)

Airport pickup is usually the most convenient option if you’re flying in and want to start your trip immediately. You’ll typically see broader vehicle selection, longer operating hours, and streamlined handover processes. It can also reduce transfer costs to resorts, especially in the south from TFS. Watch for differences between on-terminal desks and off-airport lots (shuttle time), and confirm the fuel policy and deposit rules before arrival.

Tenerife Car Rental & Driving Guide

Essential answers for US travelers planning to explore Tenerife by car

Can I drive in Tenerife with my US driver's license, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
You'll need an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your US license. Spain requires an IDP for non-EU/EEA license holders. The IDP is a simple translation booklet ($20 USD, valid 1 year) available at AAA offices. Rental agencies WILL ask for both documents—presenting only your US license may result in your reservation being cancelled. Get your IDP before departure; you cannot obtain one in Tenerife.
I'm 23—will I pay a young driver surcharge, and how much is it?
Yes, expect a young driver surcharge of €5-15/day if you're under 25. At 23, you'll fall into this category at most agencies. Surcharges vary: local companies may charge less (€5-8/day), while international brands like Hertz and Avis typically charge €10-15/day. Budget an extra €70-200 for a 2-week rental. Some agencies offer waived surcharges for ages 21+ with 2+ years of driving experience—check policies before booking.
How are the roads in Tenerife—will I encounter scary mountain drives?
Major highways (TF-1, TF-5) are excellent. However, the TF-24 to Mount Teide and the TF-436 through Anaga mountains are steep, winding, and narrow with sharp hairpin turns—goats crossing is common. Speed limits: 120 km/h highways, 100 km/h expressways, 50 km/h in towns. Speed cameras are active; fines start at €100. If heights make you nervous, avoid the Teide summit road (TF-21) which has sections with steep drop-offs. Drive slowly on mountain roads, use lower gears on descents.
Do I need a diesel or petrol car? What about electric charging?
95% of Tenerife rental cars run on petrol (gasolina). Diesel is available but unnecessary for tourists—petrol stations are abundant, especially along the coast. Electric charging infrastructure is limited (roughly 50 public stations island-wide); don't rely on an EV for long scenic drives. Most rental agencies offer only petrol vehicles with full-to-full fuel policy. Budget €50-70 for a full tank. Fill up before heading to remote areas like Teide National Park.
Can I drive to Teide volcano in winter, or will I need snow chains?
The TF-21 road to Teide summit (3,555m) can have ice and snow November-March, especially above 2,000m. When ice is reported, authorities mandate snow chains or winter tires—rental agencies often prohibit taking their cars on snow-chained roads (check your contract). The cable car runs year-round. For safety, visit Teide via the cable car rather than attempting to drive to the summit during winter months. Summer temperatures at the summit can reach 30°C while coastal areas are 25°C—bring layers and sun protection.
What happens if I get a traffic fine or damage the car—how does insurance work?
Basic liability insurance is mandatory and included; collision damage waiver (CDW) with €500-1,500 excess is standard. US credit cards often provide CDW—but verify BEFORE departure, as many cards exclude Tenerife/Spain. If you damage the car, agencies will place a hold (€500-1,500) on your credit card until repair costs are assessed. Traffic fines from cameras are sent to the rental company, which adds a €20-40 administration fee before charging your card. Always inspect the car with photos before leaving the lot—document existing scratches to avoid false damage claims.
