Rent A Car In Lima, Peru: Competitive Prices And A Practical Local Guide

Compare airport and downtown pickup options, understand insurance and fees upfront, and choose the right car for Lima traffic and day trips along the coast or into the Andes.

Updated Guide
Lima Car Rental Guide: Where To Pick Up And What To Expect
Renting a car in Lima can be a smart choice if you plan to visit destinations outside the city—such as coastal towns, desert oases, or multi-stop itineraries—where schedules are easier with your own vehicle. Within central Lima, traffic congestion, limited parking, and aggressive driving can make taxis/ride-hailing more convenient for short stays. For most travelers, the best approach is to pick up your car when you are ready to leave the city (or at the airport if you land and depart immediately), choose a vehicle with good visibility and safety features, and budget extra time for driving and parking. Always confirm what insurance is included, how deposits are handled, whether tolls are cashless, and the exact fuel policy to avoid surprises.

Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) – Callao
Lima’s main international airport and the most common place to pick up a rental car. Pros: longest hours, widest vehicle selection, easier for early/late flights, and straightforward pickup if you’re heading out of Lima right away. Cons: may cost more than city locations, can involve airport access/parking logistics, and you may drive straight into heavy traffic depending on time of day.
Miraflores (Tourist District)
Pros: convenient for travelers staying in hotels or apartments, easier to inspect the car in daylight, and often closer than the airport if you don’t need immediate pickup. Cons: street congestion, limited parking/one-way streets, and pickup hours may be shorter than airport counters.
San Isidro (Business District)
Pros: professional office area with good access to major avenues and generally a calmer pickup environment than the historic core. Cons: traffic at peak commute times can be intense, and parking near offices may be restricted or paid.

¿Qué necesitas para alquilar un coche en Lima?

Alquilar un coche en Lima es bastante cómodo, pero puede haber algunos requisitos específicos, especialmente para los conductores extranjeros.

  • Forma de identificación: A valid physical national photo ID (Japan or Peru) is required at pick-up.
  • Permiso de conducir: Main and additional drivers must present a full, physical national driving licence with no major endorsements. In most cases it must have been held for at least 1–2 years; for some offers a minimum of 1 year applies and for others 2 years. Photocopies or scanned copies are not accepted.

Notas: In some offers, the required licence holding period is exactly 1 year; in others it is 2 years or 1–2 years. For a few offers the exact minimum holding period is stated only in the full rental Terms & Conditions under the driving licence section or must be confirmed with customer service. For Japan rentals, some notes specify that only A6-sized 1949-format IDPs are supported for pick-up and that accepted translations include authorized Japanese translations for licences issued in Switzerland, Germany, France, Taiwan, Belgium, Slovenia, Estonia and Monaco.

  • Tarjetas aceptadas: Physical credit cards in the full name of the main driver are generally required. Visa and Master are always accepted; some offers also accept JCB, AMEX, DinersClub or Discover. Cash may be accepted in a few offers (often together with a credit card). Debit cards are not accepted. Some offers mention support for additional card attributes such as XpCard or DcCard. E‑vouchers or printed vouchers are accepted for many offers; some require an e‑voucher or printed voucher to be presented.
  • Requisitos de edad: Typical eligible driving ages range from minimum 18–25 up to maximum 70–99, depending on the offer. Common bands include 18–70, 20–80, 21–80, 22–75, 25–70/80/99, and 21–90. Many offers apply young driver surcharges. Examples: age 18–21 may incur about $20.00 per day; age 21–25 may incur about $11.80–$29.50 per day; age 22–24 may incur about $22.00 per day; age 21–24/25 may incur about $14.00–$20.00 per day. One offer charges an additional fee (around $22.00 per day) for older drivers aged 71–75. Exact age limits and fees depend on the specific rental offer.
  • Permiso de conducir: Main and additional drivers must present a full, physical driving licence with no major endorsements. It must generally have been held for at least 1–2 years; some offers require at least 1 year and others 2 years, while a few refer to the full rental Terms & Conditions for the exact period. Photocopies or scans are not accepted. Accepted driving licence include:
    • Original driving licence + IDP (issued under the 1949 Convention, A6-sized booklet format; vehicle seat count must match the IDP category) or
    • Original driving licence + International Driving Permit (IDP) (IDP serves only as a translation; original licence and original IDP must both be presented) or
    • Taiwan (or specified regions such as Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Slovenia, Monaco) driving licence + authorized Japanese translation issued by JAF or relevant embassies/consulates (for Japan rentals) or
    • Original South Korea Driving License (English version) with English translation provided on the back (for Peru rentals) or
    • Hong Kong driving licence + 1949 Convention IDP (for certain Japan rentals).

Notas: Some Japan offers require only A6-sized 1949 Convention IDPs for pick-up. For IDPs issued in the Philippines, you must also bring your Philippine passport and Philippine driver’s licence. Some offers require that driver’s licence, passport and IDP be issued in the same country. For licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Taiwan, Belgium, Slovenia, Estonia and Monaco used in Japan, an authorized Japanese translation from JAF or relevant diplomatic offices is required. In other offers, the minimum licence holding period is defined only in the full rental Terms & Conditions or must be confirmed with customer service.

  • Tarjetas aceptadas: Physical credit cards in the full name of the main driver are required. Visa and Master are always accepted; some locations also accept JCB, AMEX, DinersClub and/or Discover. Cash is allowed only in a few offers and usually alongside a credit card. Debit cards are not accepted. Some offers support extra card attributes such as XpCard or DcCard. Many bookings accept either an e‑voucher or printed voucher; where explicitly stated, you must present an e‑voucher or printed voucher. Some rentals may require printed proof of insurance coverage (Collision/Theft and/or Third Party) issued by your credit card bank or insurer, showing your name/card details, coverage, validity dates, applicable countries and vehicle types.

Lima's historic downtown features narrow colonial streets where navigating tight corners is much easier in a compact car. Parking in Miraflores and San Isidro can be challenging, but a small vehicle fits into smaller spots with less stress. The lightweight chassis handles stop-and-go traffic on Avenida Javier Prado efficiently while consuming less fuel. This option is perfect for solo travelers or couples looking to explore the city's vibrant neighborhoods without hassle.

The road from Lima to the Sacred Valley climbs from sea level to over 11,000 feet, presenting sharp turns, steep inclines, and variable weather conditions that demand a capable vehicle. An SUV provides the elevated ground clearance needed when unpaved sections appear near mountain passes and the robust suspension smooths out rough patches. Higher altitude regions like Cusco experience sudden rainstorms, and the SUV's stability systems offer reassurance on slick descents. This is the ideal choice for adventurers heading to Machu Picchu or the scenic routes around Huaraz.

The coastal desert highway south of Lima leads to breathtaking spots like Paracas, where the road is well-maintained but often winds close to dramatic cliffsides above the ocean. An SUV handles the occasional sandy pull-offs near beach destinations like Punta Sal and the gravel paths to dunes near Huacachina with ease. The higher seating position provides panoramic views of the Pacific while keeping families comfortable on longer drives. This vehicle is the smart choice for travelers wanting to explore Peru's beaches and desert landscapes in comfort.

Why Pick Up At LIM Airport

Airport pickup is ideal for maximum availability and flexible hours—especially for late arrivals, early departures, or travelers who plan to leave Lima immediately. You’ll usually find more vehicle classes (including automatics and SUVs), clearer after-hours procedures, and faster swapping if a car type isn’t available. Expect slightly higher daily rates and allow extra time for airport-area traffic when entering or exiting the city.

Lima Car Rental Guide

Essential FAQ for driving and renting cars in Lima, Peru

Can I use my US driver's license to drive in Peru, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Your US driver's license is valid for tourist use in Peru, but an International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended. Police checkpoints are common outside Lima, and an IDP serves as an official translation—if you're stopped and only have an English license, you may face delays or fines. The IDP costs about $20 USD through AAA and is valid for 1 year. Get one before your trip as you cannot obtain it in Peru.
How do toll roads work in Peru? Can I pay with cash?
Peru's major highways, including the Pan-American Highway (Route 1) and the Central Highway, have toll booths (peaje). Most accept both cash and credit cards, but having some Peruvian soles on hand is wise as some remote booths may have limited card capability. Toll fees vary: the Lima-Chosica segment costs around 10-15 soles (~$3-4 USD), while longer stretches like Lima-Ica can run 25-50 soles (~$7-14 USD). Electronic toll tags (TelePase) are available but mainly beneficial for frequent users.
I'm 23 years old—will I pay a young driver surcharge to rent a car in Lima?
Yes, expect a young driver surcharge if you're under 25. Most Peruvian rental agencies charge an additional 20-30 soles (~$5-8 USD) per day for drivers aged 21-24. Some agencies set the minimum age at 21, while premium or specialty vehicles may require 25+. Book early and check the specific age policy, as it varies by rental company. Being over 25 saves you this daily fee and sometimes opens access to better vehicle options.
Is driving in Lima as chaotic as people say? What should I expect?
Lima's traffic is notoriously aggressive and congested—rush hour (7-10 AM and 5-9 PM) can turn a 30-minute drive into 90 minutes. Drivers frequently change lanes without signaling, ignore yellow lights, and use horns constantly. Red light right turns are generally prohibited unless explicitly posted with a green arrow. Parking in Miraflores and San Isidro is easier with paid lots (15-25 soles/hour), while historic Centro de Lima has limited parking. If you're nervous about city driving, consider renting at the airport and immediately heading to your destination via highway, avoiding Lima proper if possible.
What type of fuel do Peruvians use, and will I have trouble finding gas stations?
Peru uses gasoline (gasolina) with two main grades: 84 octane (regular) and 95 octane (premium). Most rental cars run on 84 or 95—check your rental agreement. Gas stations (Grifo) are plentiful along major highways and in cities, with国有 major chains like Petroperú, Primax, and Repshop. In Lima and along the Pan-American Highway, you'll never be far from a station. However, if venturing into remote areas (Amazon, high Andes), fill up whenever you have a full tank and carry an extra canister—some stretches have 100+ km gaps.
What insurance do I really need when renting in Peru? Can I use my credit card coverage?
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) with a deductible is mandatory at most Peruvian rental desks—their own basic CDW typically costs 50-100 soles (~$14-28 USD)/day. Your credit card's CDW coverage often works in Peru, but you'll still need to leave a credit card pre-authorization (often $1,000-2,000 USD) and be prepared to pay out-of-pocket for damages before your card reimburses you. Third-party liability insurance is usually minimal, so if you want higher coverage (recommended), expect to pay extra. Read the exclusions carefully—standard CDW often doesn't cover tires, mirrors, or undercarriage damage on Peru's sometimes-rough roads.
