Kampala Car Rental Guide: Where To Pick Up and What To Expect
Renting a car in Kampala can be a smart way to reach business districts, suburbs, and day-trip routes on your own schedule—especially if you plan to leave the city (for example toward Jinja or national park corridors). Expect dense traffic, roundabouts, and variable road surfaces; many travelers choose a higher-clearance vehicle for comfort. Prices and availability can vary by season and vehicle type, so comparing quotes, confirming what’s included (insurance, mileage, driver policy), and documenting the car’s condition at pickup are key to a smooth rental.

Entebbe International Airport (EBB) – Arrivals Pickup
Kampala’s primary airport is Entebbe International (EBB), located in Entebbe, roughly 35–45 km from central Kampala (drive time often 1–2+ hours depending on traffic). Airport-area pickup is convenient after landing and can reduce the need for taxis or ride-hailing with luggage. Pros: easier after-hours coordination, straightforward start for upcountry trips, and you can inspect the vehicle before the long drive. Cons: airport/meet-and-greet surcharges may apply, and the drive into Kampala can be slow during peak hours—confirm whether pickup is at the terminal, a nearby office, or a meet-and-greet point.
Nakasero / Central Business District (CBD)
Popular for business travelers and those staying in central hotels. Pros: close to offices, embassies, and major hotels; easy to return the car before meetings. Cons: heavy congestion, limited parking, and stricter attention to one-way streets—plan extra time for pickup and return.
Kololo / Acacia Area
A convenient area near shopping and many expat-friendly services. Pros: easier hotel access than the core CBD and typically better parking than downtown. Cons: traffic can still build quickly around key junctions; some rental partners operate by appointment only, so confirm exact meeting location.

Uganda Car Rental & Driving Guide

Essential self-drive tips for Kampala and beyond - from road rules to wildlife encounters

Can I drive in Uganda with my US license, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Your US license alone is technically accepted for up to 90 days, but an International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended and often required by rental companies. Uganda drives on the left (British style) with right-hand drive vehicles - a significant adjustment for most American drivers. The IDP costs around $20 through AAA and takes 15-20 minutes to get. Without it, you'll face pushback at checkpoints and potential insurance issues.
How bad are Kampala's roads and traffic really? What should I expect?
Honest answer: challenging. Kampala has notorious congestion - expect 1-2 hours to cross the city during rush hour (7-9 AM, 5-8 PM). Road surfaces vary wildly - main highways are decent but side streets are full of potholes. Rainy seasons (March-May, September-November) turn unpaved roads into mud traps. A 4x4 SUV is non-negotiable if you're venturing outside the city. Keep spare tires and expect to navigate around pedestrians, bikes, and occasional livestock on roads.
How do I pay for toll roads and fuel in Uganda?
Toll roads exist - the Kampala Northern Bypass and a few select highways use electronic tolling or manned booths (cash accepted in Ugandan shillings). Fuel is readily available in cities but scarce in rural areas - always fill up when you spot a station. Diesel and unleaded gasoline are both offered. Carry enough cash for tolls as card payments aren't universally accepted. Credit cards work at major gas stations like Shell and Total but confirm beforehand.
What's the speed limit and how are speed enforcement cameras structured?
Urban speed limit: 50 km/h (31 mph). Highway speed limit: 80 km/h (50 mph). Speed enforcement includes fixed cameras on major highways and police checkpoints - police presence is common. Fines for speeding can range from 50,000 to 500,000 UGX ($15-$135). Speed cameras are often poorly marked, so don't rely on GPS warnings alone. Bottom line: stick to limits, especially near schools and hospitals which have strict 30 km/h zones.
Is it safe to drive at night in Uganda?
Night driving is strongly discouraged. Most rental companies actually prohibit it in their contracts for good reason: unpainted speed bumps, broken-down vehicles without lights, pedestrians in dark clothing, and occasional wildlife on roads make it extremely hazardous. If you must drive after dark (say, to catch an early morning flight), reduce speed to 40 km/h maximum and stay hyper-alert. AAA-recommended coverage for night accidents is often voided anyway.
I'm planning a self-drive safari to a national park. Any wildlife-specific warnings?
Wildlife can literally walk onto the road - especially near Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, and Lake Mburo parks. Hippos kill more people in Uganda than any other animal, and they're nocturnal. Never drive off-road in parks (heavy fines), keep windows closed near baboons, and don't stop in the middle of unpaved roads for photos. Your rental company will likely require a 4x4 with high clearance and may mandate daytime-only driving. Safari drives with rangers are safer and often better for wildlife spotting anyway.
