Harare Car Rental Guide

Essential driving tips and rental advice for self-drive travel in Zimbabwe

Can I drive in Zimbabwe with my US license, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
You'll need an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your US driver's license. Zimbabwe doesn't recognize US licenses alone—you must present both documents at the rental counter. The IDP is valid for 1 year and can be obtained from AAA in the US before departure. Without an IDP, rental companies will refuse to hand over the vehicle, no exceptions.
Is Zimbabwe left-hand or right-hand drive, and will US drivers get confused?
Zimbabwe drives on the LEFT side of the road—British-style, opposite of the US. This is a major adjustment for American drivers. Steering wheels are on the RIGHT side of vehicles. Take extra caution at intersections, roundabouts, and when overtaking. If possible, rent an automatic transmission to reduce one layer of complexity. Spend 10-15 minutes in an empty parking lot before hitting main roads.
What about fuel availability and prices? Should I worry about fuel shortages?
Fuel is generally available at major cities and along the A1 highway (Harare-Bulawayo route), but rural areas see shortages, especially during the wet season (November-March). Diesel and unleaded petrol (95 octane) are the main fuels available. Always keep the tank above half full, particularly when traveling to Hwange or other remote game reserves. Carry USD cash for fuel purchases in rural areas—credit cards aren't always accepted at remote stations.
Are the roads safe for self-driving, especially at night?
Major highways like the A1 and A2 are paved and in fair condition, but night driving is strongly discouraged. Unlit roads, pedestrians, cyclists, and especially wild animals (especially near national parks like Hwange) pose serious risks. Potholes can appear suddenly, and some rural roads become impassable during rainy season (December-March). If you must drive at night, keep speed below 80 km/h and stay on the main arterial routes.
What's the minimum age to rent a car, and will I pay a young driver surcharge?
The minimum age is typically 21 years at most rental agencies in Zimbabwe. Drivers aged 21-24 will pay a young driver surcharge of approximately $15-25 USD per day. Some premium 4x4 vehicles (essential for game park access) require drivers to be at least 25. There's no upper age limit in Zimbabwe law, but some insurers cap coverage at age 75—check your policy before booking.
Do I need special insurance for driving in game reserves or near wildlife?
Standard rental insurance typically excludes damage caused by hitting animals. In Zimbabwe, this is a real risk—elephants, hyenas, and other wildlife frequently cross roads, especially at dawn and dusk. Check if your rental includes 'animal strike' coverage; if not, ask about adding it ($10-15/day extra). Comprehensive insurance with animal strike coverage is strongly recommended if you're visiting Hwange, Mana Pools, or other national parks.
