Goroka Car Rental Guide

Essential driving tips and FAQ for renting a car in Papua New Guinea's Eastern Highlands

Can I drive in Papua New Guinea with my US driver's license, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended and often required by rental agencies. While some locations may accept a valid US license alone, the IDP serves as both a translation document and proof of validity—especially outside Port Moresby. Budget $20-30 USD for an IDP through AAA before departure. Without it, you risk being turned away or facing insurance issues after an accident.
Goroka drives on the LEFT side—will this confuse American drivers?
Yes, this is a major adjustment. Papua New Guinea drives on the left (British-style), and most rental vehicles are right-hand drive. Coming from the US, you'll need to consciously resist the urge to drift toward the left side of the road. Take extra caution at intersections and when overtaking. Take a few minutes in an empty lot to reacquaint yourself with right-hand drive before hitting main roads.
What are the roads actually like around Goroka? Do I need a 4WD?
Expect a mix of conditions: sealed roads deteriorate rapidly, and many routes become impassable without 4WD—particularly after heavy rains. The Highlands Highway (the main route connecting Goroka to other towns) is often littered with potholes and unmarked repairs. During the rainy season (November-March), flooding can close roads for hours. A 4WD is highly recommended; standard sedans will scrape bottom on rough patches. Factor this into your vehicle choice.
How available are gas stations? What fuel type should I use?
Fuel is generally available in Goroka town, but becomes scarce on rural highways—always top off before leaving town. Unleaded petrol (95 Ron) and diesel are both available. Many gas stations are independently operated and may close by late afternoon. Carry a reserve container (5-10 liters) for remote stretches. Credit cards are not always accepted; keep ~500 PGK in cash for fuel purchases.
Is it safe to drive around Goroka? What about crime and wildlife?
Exercise normal precautions: don't leave valuables visible in parked cars, avoid driving after dark on remote roads, and inquire locally about any area closures or unrest before departing. Livestock (cattle, pigs) and pedestrians often share highways with vehicles—drive cautiously in village areas. Violent crime targeting tourists is uncommon but not unheard of in remote areas. Travel with someone when possible and inform your accommodation of your route.
What's the minimum age to rent a car, and will I pay young driver surcharges?
The minimum age is typically 21 years, though some agencies require 23-25 for larger vehicles. Drivers under 25 usually pay a young driver surcharge of $15-30 USD per day. You'll also face higher insurance deductibles. If you're under 25, factor this into your budget—compare quotes carefully, as surcharges vary significantly between agencies. Older drivers (65+) may face restrictions depending on the rental company's policy.
