Your Mongolian Adventure Starts at ULN Airport

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is mandatory for US citizens renting a car in Mongolia—your US license alone won't suffice. The IDP must be obtained before departure from AAA or similar providers (cost: ~$20). Most rental agencies also require the IDP be presented alongside your original license. Without it, you'll be turned away at the counter or face liability issues if stopped by traffic police. Allow 2-3 weeks for processing.

Winter driving (November–March) in Mongolia is extremely hazardous. Temperatures plunge to -30°C to -40°C, causing black ice on roads and engine freeze risks. Many rural roads become impassable—even main highways like the one to Terelj National Park can have unplowed snow. If you're planning to explore beyond the city, rent a 4WD vehicle with winter tires and carry tire chains at all times. Always inform your rental company of your route and check road conditions with them before departure.

Checkpoint stops are frequent throughout Mongolia—sometimes multiple per 100km. You'll need your passport, driver's license, IDP, rental agreement, and vehicle registration documents at all times. Police officers may ask for bribes (unofficial 'fines'), especially for minor infractions. Politely request an official receipt for any fine and insist on going to the police station if pressured. Keep all documents on your person, not in the vehicle's glovebox, to avoid delays.

Mongolia uses Russian-style fuel standards—predominantly AI-92 and AI-95 gasoline and diesel. Fuel quality varies, especially outside Ulaanbaatar, where some stations may have contaminated fuel. Always fill up before leaving the city and aim to keep your tank above half. Diesel is generally more available on major routes. Carry extra fuel jerry cans (rented from your agency) for remote areas like the Gobi Desert, where gas stations can be 200-400km apart.

Breakdown coverage outside Ulaanbaatar is extremely limited. Most basic rental insurance excludes off-road recovery and remote-area towing. Before signing, confirm whether your policy includes 24/7 roadside assistance with helicopter evacuation (recommended for remote travel). Carry a survival kit: blankets, food, water, and a charged power bank. Mobile phone coverage is spotty beyond the city—consider renting a satellite communication device (~$15/day) from your rental company.

Major rental agencies in Ulaanbaatar (Hertz, National, local companies) accept Visa and Mastercard but often refuse American Express due to high transaction fees. Expect a pre-authorization hold of $500–$1,500 on your card, depending on the vehicle type—this hold can take 15–30 business days to release after return. Many agencies prefer cash payments for the rental itself. Notify your bank of Mongolia travel beforehand to prevent fraud-detection card blocks.
