Faroe Islands Car Rental Guide

Essential driving tips and car rental FAQs for Sorvagur and the Faroe Islands

Can I use my US driver's license to drive in the Faroe Islands?
Yes, US citizens can drive with a valid US license, but most rental companies require an International Driving Permit (IDP) as a translation document. An IDP costs about $20 and can be obtained from AAA before your trip. Without it, some agencies may refuse to hand over the car. Book your IDP early—it's not something you want to scramble for upon arrival.
How bad are the roads? I'm worried about mountain driving.
The Faroe Islands have narrow, winding roads with sharp turns, single-track bridges, and frequent one-lane tunnels (including undersea ones). Speed limits are 50 km/h in villages and 80 km/h on open roads. In fog or rain—and it rains 280+ days per year—visibility drops dramatically. Drive slowly, honk in tunnels (it's required), and never attempt to cross a narrow bridge head-on with another car.
What about fuel? Will I find gas stations easily?
Petrol and diesel are available, but gas stations are sparse—some islands have only one. The N1 station chain is most common, and most are self-service with card payment (Visa/Mastercard). Always top up when you're below half a tank, especially before heading to remote areas like the village of Gásadalur or the northern islands. A full tank small car rental runs about 1,400-1,800 DKK ($200-260).
I'm 22. Will I pay a young driver surcharge, and how much?
Yes, drivers under 25 typically pay a young driver surcharge of roughly 100-200 DKK ($15-30) per day. Some agencies charge up to 250 DKK ($35) daily for drivers aged 21-24. At 22, you're definitely in this category. Factor this into your budget—it can add 700-1,750 DKK ($100-250) to a week-long rental.
What's the weather like for driving? Do I need winter tires?
The Faroe Islands experience harsh, unpredictable weather year-round. Winter (October-March) brings icy roads, snow, and only 4-5 hours of daylight. Summer sees fog, heavy rain, and winds exceeding 50 mph. Winter tires (studded or chains) are recommended from November through March. Even in summer, carry rain gear and mentally prepare for white-out conditions—weather changes in minutes.
Are there toll roads or congestion charges I need to know about?
No toll roads exist in the Faroe Islands, and there's no congestion charge. However, the 6.2-mile undersea tunnel connecting Streymoy and Vágar islands (the Vágatunnilin) is free to use. The ferry fromvíðoýri to Tórshavn operates on a schedule and costs around 100 DKK ($15) per car each way—cash or card accepted at the terminal.
