US tourists can use their valid US driver's license in Belize for up to 90 days. The minimum age to rent a car in Belize is 21 years old, though some agencies require drivers to be 25. If you're between 21-24, expect a young driver surcharge of approximately $25-35 USD per day on top of the rental rate. Drivers under 21 generally cannot rent vehicles at all. Some agencies also charge a senior driver fee (approximately $15-20/day) for drivers over 65 or 70. Belize has only about 3,300 miles of roads, with roughly 60% paved. The Philip Goldson Highway connecting Belize City to Belmopan and the Western Highway are generally in decent condition but have potholes. Coastal roads can flood during rainy season (June-November). Many interior roads are unpaved and require 4WD, especially in rural areas and during wet weather. Always fill up before heading to remote areas or the cayes—running out of gas far from a station can ruin your trip. The 'full-to-full' policy is standard: you receive the car with a full tank and return it full.

Basic liability insurance is mandatory in Belize but coverage amounts are typically low. Most rental agencies include basic CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) in the rate, though deductibles often range from $1,000-2,500 USD. Your US auto insurance and credit card coverage may not apply in Belize—verify BEFORE departure. Comprehensive insurance with zero deductible is worth the extra $15-30/day for peace of mind given road conditions. Expect a credit card hold of $500-1,500 depending on the vehicle. Do not skip insurance—medical and tow services in Belize can be extremely expensive.

Watch for roaming livestock (cows, horses) on roads, especially at night in rural zones. Speed bumps ('sleeping policemen') appear suddenly and are often unmarked. Traffic signals are limited in rural areas—four-way stops are common. Avoid driving during heavy rain (May-November) when roads flood and visibility drops to near zero. Wildlife collisions, particularly with iguanas and armadillos, are common. Never leave valuables visible in your car—break-ins at popular attractions are frequent.
