Your Gateway to Kabul: Rent a Car at KBL Airport

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended alongside your valid national license. While local regulations don't always require it officially, most rental agencies and police checkpoints will ask for one. The IDP must be in English. Minimum age is typically 21 for rentals (some companies charge a young driver surcharge for ages 21-24). Your home country license alone is rarely sufficient for vehicle pickup.

Afghanistan drives on the LEFT side of the road with RIGHT-hand drive vehicles (British-style). This is the opposite of the US and most European countries. If you're renting a car, it will be right-hand drive. This takes adjustment if you're used to left-hand traffic—always be extra cautious at intersections and when overtaking. Budget extra time to acclimate to this unusual configuration before tackling busy city streets.

Road conditions vary dramatically. Major highways like the Kabul–Mazar-i-Sharif road are relatively well-maintained, but many urban roads have significant potholes, unpaved sections, and minimal lighting. Security is the primary concern: armed checkpoints are frequent throughout the city and on highways. Travel outside Kabul city limits often requires security permits. Avoid driving at night outside city limits. Always carry your passport, visa, and rental documents. Some areas have travel advisories or restrictions—check yours before planning routes.

Kabul sits at approximately 1,800m elevation and experiences harsh winters (December–February) with regular snowfall and freezing temperatures dropping to -15°C or lower. Snow chains are essential for any travel outside the city, especially on mountain passes. Roads can become icy and hazardous with poor visibility. Carry blankets, water, and emergency supplies in case of breakdown. Many rental companies offer vehicles with winter tires—always confirm this when booking. If you're not experienced driving in snow, strongly consider postponing non-essential trips.

Both petrol (gasoline) and diesel are widely available at independent stations throughout Kabul and along major highways, though quality can be inconsistent. Unleaded fuel exists but is not always guaranteed. Payment is typically in cash (Afghani), and credit cards are rarely accepted at gas stations. The fuel is generally cheaper than in Western countries. Full-to-full refueling policies are standard with rental companies. Electric vehicle charging infrastructure is essentially nonexistent in Afghanistan—do not rely on it. Always keep your tank above half-full when traveling outside Kabul.

Police and military checkpoints are ubiquitous and can appear suddenly. Always stop as soon as signaled, keep hands visible, and have documents ready. Bribery attempts at checkpoints are possible—remain polite but firm. Traffic police may pull you over for violations like illegal turns or undocumented modifications. Fines are typically paid on the spot in cash. Keep small denominations of Afghani on hand for this purpose. Violations for tourists are often handled with warnings rather than fines, but this varies. Photography near government buildings and security installations is strictly prohibited.
